Today, Jony Ive officially resigned at Apple. It is big news in the entire tech community. He played a significant role in making Apple stand out from its competitors through his design. He is a pivotal person at Apple, and there is no argument here.
There will be a flood of articles covering Jony Ive’s resignation and Apple’s aftermath. Most of these articles will make a big deal about Apple’s design without him. To be clear, Apple was mostly working without him in recent years, and his departure will not make a significant impact as the articles will make you believe so. Ever since Ive’s promotion to the chief design officer a few years ago, he mostly did nothing. It was just a guest role, and his day to day work had been relinquished to other executives. His resignation was a long time in making. He made it clear that he felt tired designing at Apple in an interview. He was tired, he must have felt pressure, and it was time for Apple to let go of this legendary designer. Mentally, he already left Apple, but he is physically leaving only now.
I’m sure that Apple was making all the preparations for this day, and will be working well even without Jonathan Ive.
